Coach Nakase: All the players like to be coached hard, credit to the players.

Me: In crunch time, you kept running the small-small pick and roll with Carla setting the screen for Veronica. What was the strategy behind that?

NN: They were blitzing and wanted to keep the SEA defense out of that action and the ball in our guards’ hands.

Up 4, 27.9 to go, 8 on the shot clock. What do you run? Another small-small pick and roll with Leite and Burton?

By the way, the whole crowd is standing and screaming.

Kayla gets slammed coming up to get the ball, no call. Broken play.

SEA gets it... illegal screen. Two hard grabby screens by Clark and I guess they couldn't overlook the last one. What a gift. And maybe a whiff of make-up call.

It's interesting that they give it to KT for the game sealing FTs. Burton shoots the best percentage. Maybe KT is the best receiver (height) of the inbound and VB is the best passer-in.

That should do it, up 6 with 13 seconds to go. Thrilling game.

Huge mistake for SEA's Clark with that moving screen on Burton. Could be the difference for us!

GSV up 5 with a minute left. But it feels like a 1 point lead.

q4.0.55. GSV same small ghost play. Switched cleanly by SEA. But this time they swing swing to Temi sealing in the paint. Gets a putback but too late. Shot clock violation.

Oh wait, they are reviewing if that did touch the rim. I don't know what happens if it did. Do they count the putback as imminent or just give the ball to GSV.

BASKET COUNTS.

That could be the difference....

q4.1:30. Talbot gets stuck, makes a miraculous skip pass to a KT 3... miss. But Veronica Burton absolutely embodies my catchphrase "excuse me I believe you have my property"

q.3.35. back to the 2-3 zone. SEA jacks up a wing 3, in.

Leite cannot handle the pressure of the hard show, which is looking more and more trap like as GSV fails to punish.

Corporate has sent a memo, company mission accomplished, Always Close Enough To Hurt™ .

2.30. GSV Same small ghost play with Leite, SEA plays that much better. This time they switch it cleanly. It's hard to beat a pro team the same way repeatedly.

q4.3.53. EXACTLY the same play, small-small screen from Leite, VB drive, this time no help from the corner, VB gets to the basket, fouled.

q4.5.36. Lead down to 7. It's back to being a game. GSV was up 20+. It doesn't help that GSV is shooting 14% from 3. We lose money on every sale but we make it up in volume. Turnovers also hurting badly.

Burton coughs up the ball. Then Burton with ANOTHER turnover. Dodge a Buller, there was an open three. Down FIVE.

4.30. Leite sets the small-small ghost screen that lets Burton turn the corner, help comes off KT, kick out, BIG THREE.

q3.1.05. SEA guards the PNR with a very soft show and recover and going under, and VB just goes all the way on the recovery. EXACTLY the same thing next play, but VB muffs the layup.

0.20. Leite PNR and again SEA with the customized bespoke hard show on Leite which turns Into a trap which turns into a WILD skip pass turnover. Carla has to settle down and be prepared for that.

Given all the breakdowns, GSV should be satisfied to be up 14 after 3.

Q4.9.14. Leite with ANOTHER intercepted pass on the PNR. Definitely her weakness right now. SEA slices it to 9 down. Leite makes up for it a little with 2 FTs at the other end.

8.35. GSV *still* in the 2-3 zone. This time they deflect the SEA entry to the center in the middle of the zone.

7.50. This time, GSV intercepts the inside pass to the roller.

7.05. It's 325 play again. Praying that GSV scores so I have an excuse to make a video about it. Nope.

6.45. I *think* GSV is back to 1-on-1 defense.

4.30. SEA starting to get somewhere by throwing the ball to the middle of the 2-3 zone.

3.58. high PNR, same rotation by SEA with the help in from the weak wing (same one from KT's dagger the other night), but Kate can't hit the wide open 3.

2.51. SEA signals HORNS with the hand sign. Nice backcut from the right elbow.

2.39. HEY it's 325, the Warriors 55 play, except this time they take the pass to the roller option.

2.04. Nakase making hand signals for the next play but I'll have to watch it on replay to catch it. Definitely can't see it in person from the stands.

Burton audibles with Amihere another keeper fake DHO, but she tags the defender in the face. I think second offensive foul for LA?

q3.9.10. Interesting, I have never seen a scram switch *during* a box out. Burton got stuck on a big and Fagbenle tried to switch during the box out

SEA's PNR defense is specific and refined. On Leite is a hard show and recover. On Burton it's drop.

5.45. You know how I said GSV had to organize the spacing to allow back cuts to punish the hard shows? They've gone three across the top, slipped screens and quick rolls from smalls like Leite. The small defenders aren't used to guarding the screener and aren't used to playing show defense.

I think it's fair to say now, 9-10 games in to the season, that Coach Nakase is really proving how legit a head coach she is. Taking a new team and doing as well as we have been and against great teams no matter who is in and out of the lineup, is impressive.

Credit to our GM and President, too. They had a game plan going into this season and are proving that we aren't a team to be trifled with.

Halftime. Fun young women running around playing. Jumbotron has postgame interview with Brea.

Q: "Are you the captain of the team?"

A: "... I don't know!"

That's right, this team is an anarchist collective, let's keep it straight. No hierarchies here.

0.22. Burton signals wing pick and roll with the parabola signal. But she elbows the defender in the face. No call, so she drives and kicks for a Leite 3 which after much review fuss I guess ends up being an offensive foul. Probably the fair outcome given the start of the play.

Halftime. GSV has whacked the hottest team in the WNBA in the first half, up 13. SEA needs to solve this zone or they are doomed. I imagine they'll have some counters. Question of whether GSV starts mixing it up. I don't think they can play zone the whole game??
